Fiction Games Code Ideas

Roleplaying & Resources

Seriously, read these pages. I've got a little bit of everything here: game theory, campaign design, tips and tricks, inspiration, resources. I've split the list up into stuff for GMs, stuff for players, and stuff for everyone.

Update, November 12, 2016: Finally thought to add my go-to podcasts!

For GMs...

* Chaotic Shiny: More generators than you could possibly have occasion to use in a single game. If you need something on the fly, you can probably find a generator for it on this page.

* Behind the Name: If you need a random name that feels right (and has a strong historical/literary basis), this is the place for you. This is one of the most complete naming sites I've found, and if you're into languages (or if you like hiding little meanings in NPC names), then the rest of this site is a wonder to explore.

* Specialization and Assumed Competence: This is an important read for game designers (for obvious reasons), but it's also important for GMs, who have to think about what level of "assumed competence" their players are acting under. Is it assumed that everyone in the party can at least swing a sword and hit someone? Are ranks in Perception indicative of alertness or almost superhuman senses? Designing custom systems and one-shots became much easier for me after reading this article.

* Fallen Elves: In my games I always strive to make the different races alien, not just humans with hats. This post inspired a lot of what would become the fairies in my own setting, and it's a terrific example of how to take something vaguely familiar (the standard D&D elf) and give it layers of new, strange complexities... And the fact that the article is Tolkien-centric also helps.

* Idle Red Hands Podcast: Although this one is now sadly dead, it's absolutely worth an archive-binge for any GM in need of ideas. Every episode is jam-packed with great ideas that you'll want to steal for your own games. I've based entire campaigns off throw-away lines from this podcast.

For Players....

* Gamerstable Podcast: Although they're a little more D&D-aligned than I would like, this podcast consistently turns out great podcasts which always leave you with one or two things to think about.

* Keep Your GM Happy!: This is the kind of stuff that makes the whole experience better. These are things players can do to take a good game and make it great. Give it a read, and make your next game that much better.

For Everyone...

* Happy Jacks RPG Podcast: Easily the best podcast on this list. Although it's normally aimed more at GMs than players, this is one of those 'casts where the advice they give is so good, so universal, that even players will find a wealth of things they can use at the table.

* Dyvers' Best Reads of the Week: The amount of quality information provided here is astounding. Every time I read one of these, I end up with a larger blogroll than when I started.

* Stack Exchange: RPGs: Need advice? Have a rules question? Looking for tips and tricks? If you can possibly frame what you're looking for into a question, you'll find it somewhere on here. If you hit a wall in your own game, make an account and ask about it. You'll get nothing but good advice.
